Building an AI Security Gateway to protect LLM applications from prompt injection, runaway costs, provider outages, and API key leaks.

Introduction

Over the past several months, I've been building Corrath, an AI Security Gateway designed for developers and teams deploying LLM-powered applications in production.

As AI applications become more capable, they also become harder to secure.

Prompt injection, excessive API costs, provider outages, leaked API keys, and poor visibility into AI traffic are becoming common operational problems.

I wanted to build a single gateway that sits between an application and AI providers to solve these problems without requiring major infrastructure changes.

The Problem

Today, most AI applications connect directly to providers like:

• OpenAI
• Anthropic Claude
• Google Gemini
• Mistral
• DeepSeek

That works well initially.

As usage grows, several challenges appear:

• Prompt injection attacks
• Runaway API costs
• API key leakage
• Provider outages
• No centralized monitoring
• Difficult multi-provider routing
• No per-project budgets
• Limited visibility into requests

Most teams end up combining multiple services to solve these issues.

I wanted everything in one place.

Building Corrath

Corrath acts as a centralized AI gateway between applications and LLM providers.

Instead of calling providers directly, applications send requests through Corrath.

Corrath analyzes every request before forwarding it.

The goal is to make AI infrastructure:

• More secure
• Easier to monitor
• Easier to scale
• More cost efficient

Design Goals

While building Corrath, I focused on five principles:

1. Security First

Every request should be inspected before reaching an LLM.

2. Low Latency

Security shouldn't slow down inference.

The gateway is designed to keep request latency extremely low.

3. Multi-Provider Support

Applications shouldn't be locked to one provider.

Corrath supports routing between multiple AI providers.

4. Developer Experience

Developers should be able to integrate within minutes using simple APIs.

5. Complete Visibility

Every AI request should generate useful operational insights.

Lessons Learned

Building AI infrastructure is very different from building a traditional SaaS application.

Some of the biggest lessons were:

• AI workloads are unpredictable.
• Monitoring is just as important as security.
• Cost control becomes essential at scale.
• Good developer experience matters as much as features.
• Simple APIs are more valuable than complicated dashboards.
